The Top 3 Golf Clubs Right Now in South Africa
South Africa provides a golfing experience unlike any other, whether teeing off amid the backdrop of sandy beaches, hiking through verdant slopes or exploring animal reserves. We rank the three best South African clubs here:
1. Glenvista Country Club
Situated in a valley at the base of
the Klipriviersberg Ridge, Glenvista Country Club has
a delightful contemporary layout that is something of a hidden treasure in the
hills south of Johannesburg. Among the top 100 courses in Gauteng, its tourist
green charge is among the lowest. The clubhouse is perched on a high hill and
offers a picturesque view of the holes. From the N12 highway, you may reach the
course via Kliprivier Drive or Comaro Street.
The parkland course’s highlight is the
brook that winds its way through the grounds and plays a role on thirteen of
the holes. Ample water for irrigation is also guaranteed. The back nine has
several spectacular, uniquely designed holes, starting with the par-4 tenth,
whose fairway drops precipitously towards a massive dam. Going straight ahead,
you’ll cross the water and arrive at the pin.
2. Ruimsig Country Club
Back
in 1985, Ron Kirby and Gary Player collaborated to develop the
course at Ruimsig Country Club, which was then known as Roodepoort CC.
In contrast to the majority of Johannesburg’s parkland courses, which have
tree-lined fairways, this course’s holes are spread out across more open
terrain, presenting players with water hazards, bunker complexes and heavy
rough.
The
greens are another important aspect to consider;
they tend to be bigger and have more subtle
breaks and borrows than the greens on most South African courses—their
reputation for playing fast and hard stems from the 1997 replacement of all
eighteen putting surfaces.
With four short holes ranging in
length from 185 to 225 yards from the championship tees, Ruimsig is a
relatively lengthy course. However, golfers have a range of options, allowing
them to play from 5,800 yards to 7,350 yards.
3. Durban Country Club
Some commentators consider the first
five holes of Durban Country Club to be the greatest on any course in the
world. Sure, it’s a significant assertion, but successive redesigns have only
made minor adjustments to the original course layout created by Laurie Waters
in the 1920s. Since Durban’s rapid plant growth rendered it practically
impossible to retain the course as a links course amid the Dunes, the most
notable alteration has been its progressive evolution. You won’t get back to
the renowned clubhouse until you’ve played past the 18th hole, which is where
the front nine of the course ends.
The Durban Country Club is formidable
at its full championship length and the course begins with a lengthy par 4.
Although the recent floods were unfortunate for the course, they did force the
building of a better drainage system.
